Before Angelswin.com???

Recommended Posts

Initially the ESPN forums (which self-destructed).  Then, as an AL West fan, visited on Halos Heaven, which had some good posters but Rev's immense snark and immaturity ran me off.  Found Chuck's first setup, liked it, connected, and have been a reader and infrequent poster ever since.  As the administrator of Jamey Newberg's Ranger fansite forum, thoughtful Angel fans and baseball addicts regardless of team patronage make it a fairly good site to visit.  I was happy to recommend angelswin.com to other Rangerlanders, some of whom behave and of course a few don't.  When SBN organized the multi-tier setup they now have, some of the snark on their Angels site was reduced, but still ....      this is the go-to site for all interested in the Angels.

Thanks as always for the kind words and endorsements, Ed!

When I looked to find a new angels board, I lurked on here and halos heaven. This site is by far better for the fan experience. Their "equivalent" for fans to start threads is called "Fanposts" and receives little traffic by comparison. This site also allows us to discuss other sports, anything at all (Hangout forum), politics, even porn stars. Additionally, I like all the prediction games that you can play on here (finished 2nd last year on the daily prediction game).

I love this site and was quick to join and ignore what I guess is the biggest rival to this site. Chuck also does a very good job as a founder/editor/moderator/contributor and doesn't heavily edit the content posting on here, which I think is great. Three cheers to Chuck for starting this!

Mods: Feel free to delete if I am not supposed to bring up that other, lesser angels fan site.

Thanks HH!

I no longer have a problem with "that other site" or the Rev. Way past that, despite an ugly history and friendly fire that went on for a long time. The people that post there like their setup and content, our members & lurkers here prefer what we offer. To each his own!

My local paper had a printing deadline that was usually before the west coast games ended, so it would just say LATE.

That brings back some memories. Years ago, when the two major leagues split into divisions, for some reason known only to MLB the Atlanta Braves were put in the NL West. That meant a lot of road games against Los Angeles, San Diego and San Francisco. The scores were never in the morning paper in Jacksonville, and since this preceded ESPN, the internet and cable TV, I often had to wait for the evening paper to get the final score from the night before.

During the few times the Braves were in a pennant race, I went to work a lot of times on little sleep, staying up to watch a west coast game on WTBS that ended around 1 AM local time.

Being a fan on the east coast, I was depending on the ESPN site to get my scores and info. I found their fan forum was a great place to lurk and pick up more info than what was being reported. I moved over with everyone else when Chuck opened up shop in 2004.

I remember CarlG and Nugs causing all kinds of trouble.

Before I had access to the internet, my girlfriend (wife now) used to work at a place that was hooked up. She used to go to LA Times site, print out all the articles re the Angels, and fax them over to me. My local paper had a printing deadline that was usually before the west coast games ended, so it would just say LATE.

I was pretty much in the same boat, growing up in Rhode Island and now living in the Boston area...started on the ESPN board as it was a great place to find news on the team I had followed since 1986.  I think I was still on there during the '05 playoffs against Chicago...when Angelswin.com started up, it was the obvious choice to move over.  And though I don't post very often, I always appreciate the insight and humor the board regulars provide.  Someday, maybe I'll get out to an Angels game and meet some of you...

As for my name, I think I changed it to that after a "spirited" discussion with some regulars back in the day, in which I took offense to their mischaracterization of my fellow New Englanders.  If you're a fan of the Bouncing Souls, then you'll know what the name means.  ;)

Seriously, though, thanks as always to Chuck and everyone here for providing a home for Angels fans everywhere!

ESPN boards, starting in '99 or '00. Always a low volume poster.

Had some good times playing fantasy baseball with many of the posters, got to meet several at a "league meeting" at the Big A in 2002. Good bunch of guys. Weird to think that my wife and I were expecting our first child at the time of that meeting. Now he's almost 12. Born a few days after our championship. Time flies.

After the ESPN board became unusable, someone (popstar? Rings a bell) set up a smaller, exclusive spot. Shortly after, red emailed to tell me about angelswin. Great community. Even though I'm still a low volume poster.

No doubt. Even back in the ESPN days I was sifting through FA rumors and would see what looked like a tight nit community as I remember being new and some dude writing about his trip to Brazil......even if he made it all up it was awesome.

That carried over here but was sweet because it was just one forum initially. It would be a click fest as you read about someones travels then the next thread was how amazing The Chronicles of Riddick was on IMAX with the thread below that how Bud Black needs to be fired because Paul Byrd wasn't an ace.

Aside from the comedic relief and picking stuff up (I've seen movies, tried beers, and created workout routines I never thought I would because of this place), this place is tops for Angels info and access.

You must be thinking of Deniz/Vegas Mike. I think that was only about two years ago.

ESPN board as Rally Mo's post above describes.

I don't recall specifically ESPN screwing things up but I do remember the troll situation got out of hand and some other stuff and then one day Chuck posts -- ''hey, we're starting this new site, any of you who want to come over and check it out, please do so......."

Many of us did just that and have not been back to ESPN since.

I did check out the ESPN site once or twice since then just to see what was going on -- the last time could have been five years ago -- I can't remember -- anyway, it was either a ghost town or a shell of its former self -- perhaps both........I used to check out the other ESPN team websites when back on ESPN and some were pretty good, others just awful.......(and this dates back 10 plus years ago) but back then ESPN had its share of baseball related social media traffic -- not sure -- because I haven't been over there in so long -- but I get the feeling that ESPN sites are pretty much irrelevant anymore..........

what was pretty amazing ten years ago was how quickly the transformation happened from ESPN to Angelswin.com.........I would guess that within two weeks (or less) after Chuck's initial post inviting everyone over -- most everyone had moved over without a glance into the rear view mirror..........

I think Chuck was right and it was 2006. I remember being on espn for a couple years before we all moved over.

Chuck was actually really cool and professional about bringing up AW. It never seemed like he was stealing people and more of another option. He had brought it up a couple times, but I think a lot of us were set in our ways. He mentioned it during troll fest and the timing seemed to work. I remember his thread, but left early that day. I hopped on espn and literally no one was on/posting. I remember before I left for the day the idea to move picked up steam, but none of us moved before so I didn't take it too seriously. It was a ghost town for the day then I finally figured everyone moved over and sure enough people registered.

I remember checking into espn after I moved to see if everyone really did ditch the site and the same posts I left seeing were still on the first page. I also wanted to see if all the cool people came over and only the diehards seemed to be left. I used to frequent the nfl forums and even up until they closed all the forums in 2011ish I would check in and that place was still dead. I didn't realize how many people came over here and just dismantled the espn angels forum.

It was like one week everyone was on the ESPN board and the next we were all over here.

The trolls on the ESPN board were far funnier and some were downright entertaining. Most of the trolling we've had here has had a creepy as hell vibe. I'm glad it's settled down.
