Orange County Register: Santiago, Angels get smacked by Rangers

Recommended Posts

Hector Santiago didn’t want to throw a changeup to Alex Rios in the sixth inning of Friday night’s game at Angel Stadium with the Angels clinging to a one-run lead.

When catcher Hank Conger called for it, Santiago stepped off the mound, took a deep breath and returned to the rubber.

But Conger called it again, and Santiago threw it – right over the middle of the plate. Rios smacked it over the left-center fence for the decisive two-run homer in the Angels’ 5-2 loss.

If by "smacked" the author of the article means "b!tch slapped"... then yeah...

Comparing, in any way, Santiago to Blanton is laughable... Santiago can pitch - and with all due respect to Harold Reynolds, a pitcher's record is nearly meaningless...

They lost 5-2, not 15-2

This is why people were complaining when we came into the season with no depth at SP. Now we have a guy that can't pull his weight and we can't do a damn thing about it.

As far the run support argument, Santiago's ERA is 5.01. He's basically had one good start in 6. Even if we scored 26 runs in his 6 starts instead of 13, we'd probably still be 2-4 in those starts instead of 0-6.

Santiago is fine.  He's a fifth starter.  I had higher hopes for him based on his stuff, but he can't seem to avoid the blowup inning.  It's what 5th starters do.  He allows too many base runners and it's bit him so far.  He'll mix in a nice run at some point this season.

There also isn't another starter in the system that could do any better and he hasn't be a lock down lefty killer in his career. So I think he's better off in the back of the rotation.

He's also had some bad luck with 5 of 8 of his inherited runners crossing the plate.  Doesn't mean he's pitched well, but his overall results could be better going forward even if he doesn't do much different.

I also think he's complicated and of all the guys, it's gonna take the coaches and catchers some time to figure him out.  He's emotional and prone to letting things get to him in a bad way.  He's got a lot of different pitches and he hasn't had much development as a starter.

Give him time.  For now he serviceable.

It doesnt help that he doesnt get alot of offensive support. I think he's fine. The offense needs to step up

Yep, he has the 9th lowest run support among starters in baseball at 2.2 runs per game.  Definitely hard to win when you get little support from your offense.  If he got the same amount of run support as C.J. Wilson (8.3 per game - most in baseball), he'd have a few wins by now.

So he would have a few wins and an ERA a tick over 5.

The lack of run support hasn't helped, but it's not like poor Hector is out there throwing gems and sporting a 0-5 record.

He seems to have early Lackeyitis. He can get through the first few innings fine and then kablamo.

I was thinking Ervinitis.

Little things go wrong for him(the balk in NY, Fielder's infield single last night, the K/wild pitch in Seattle) and he seems to let it get to him and he completely unravels.

True, but with this offense, 4,4,1,0,4,5 (runs given up by Santiago in each start) shouldn't be too hard to handle.

It's hard to pitch in games like that Jshep.  Where you feel like every pitch has to be perfect.  People can say that he's a professional athlete and it shouldn't affect him, but he's an emotional guy and it's unrealistic to think it wouldn't.  He's up 2-0, makes a bad pitch and then it's 2-1.  All of a sudden, another runner is on and it's in his head that he can't make one more bad one.

Doc brings up an interesting point. Maybe Santiago is like the pitcher in Bad News Bears 2, who has too many types of deliveries and finally throws strikes when using ONE delivery. Maybe Santiago needs to limit himself to 3 pitches with a 4th occasionally used, and see what that does?

AO, never stop being you

Are you talking about the italian kid named carmine? Lol

I'll take 2-4 from the 5th starter
