This team is about to get hot. I could be wrong but I'm feeling it - this team just seems ripe to take off. Calhoun will be back soon, then a couple weeks later Hamilton. By the All-Star Break this team will be 10+ games above .500 and in the thick of a pennant race.

Pollyanna? Maybe, but I'd rather feel this way and be wrong than be totally bummed out.

Let's go, folks!

Good, it makes your brain tired to think bad things are about to happen.  As Santana once said, "F**k it, let's pitch."

Well there's more than just alcohol fueling my optimism (or, more realistically, hopefulness). The team has answered a couple of big questions:

1. Pujols and Hamilton still have some life, and then some.

2. Skaggs, Richards, and Santiago are all talented, at least average plus pitchers.

The biggest question remains the bullpen and, to a lesser degree, Jered Weaver. But imagine this: the bullpen equalizes a bit. Hamilton comes back strong and the offense goes nuts. The starting pitching continues to be above average.

All of that equals a 90+ win team.

If this team can stay above 500 until Hamilton and Calhoun get back they have a real good shot at the playoffs.

At the very least, we don't seem to be headed for the catastrophic April that has been typical of recent seasons and has buried us in the standings and left us scrambling the rest of the season trying to make it up. It would probably be even better had Josh Hamilton not gotten hurt, with the kind of start he was off to.

if we can improve our bullpen either through trade, call ups, or dumb luck, then we'll have a shot at making the playoffs. i'm hoping for some shrewd trade for a closer, but i think, if anything, it'll be a 7th or 8th type guy.

Hard to feel optimistic sometimes.  Sure, Ham and Albert look like they're fully back and our rotation looks legit.  There's still the little problem that they don't have any pitching depth and their three best relievers are wasting away in AA/AAA while Frieri gives up the long ball and everyone else outside of Smith misses the plate by a foot.

So many good things and a few bad ones.

I like that the offense stepped up despite the injuries. I like that our young pitchers are confident. I like that Pujols has snapped out of his funk. I like that Weaver has looked better recently. I like that Kohn has settled down and shown he can get batters out. I like that we're not bunt happy lately.

I don't like Frieri in the 9th, but I never have. When he doesn't have it, you know right away. Yet we have him in a situation where he isn't pulled if he doesn't have it until its too late.

I don't like that we're going with journeymen with a track record of fail, rather than the unknown of youth.

That's about it.

See you other masochists Friday.
