Kyle McGowin

We spent our 5th round pick to get him. I'll be following his progress closely because I feel by next year he could be our top starting pitching prospect.

So far in 3 starts (High-A):

17.0 IP  13 SO  6 BB  1,06 ERA  1.059 WHIP

We got our eye on him too.

Here's our scouting report on him.

(Orem): 1-1, 6.28 ERA, 5 BBs, 12 Ks, 14.1 IP

Drafted in the 5th round of the 2013 draft, this lanky right-hander has a projectable frame that could develop into either a starter or a reliever. Undrafted in high school, McGowin became Savannah State’s first pitcher ever drafted and the highest player in the school’s history.

A hard worker, McGowin has a competitive streak that will serve him well as he moves up the organizational ladder. McGowin throws a 90-93 mph fastball that he can ratchet up to 95. He has a plus slider and a developing changeup. As a pitcher, he generates a lot of ground balls, but also has the ability to punch out plenty with his stuff.

McGowin’s future lies primarily in his ability to develop his changeup. If he can make that an average offering, the Angels will most likely keep him as a starter. If not, he’ll move to the bullpen.

As a prospect, McGowin is a bit of a sleeper. Coming from a lower-ranked baseball program, some scouts held that against him even though he was an All-American last year. He only saw limited action as a pro in 2013 (after pitching 120 innings in college and punching out 135 with a 2.02 ERA), but 2014 should see him getting a lot more work in where he is a candidate for a breakout season.
