The author the new book "Capital in the Twenty-First Century" describes an oligarchy on a 'global' scale.  It apparently details the growth of capitalism and distribution of wealth over the last 2 or 3 centuries.  The book has gotten nothing but rave reviews.

 

This particular review describes the book as a "work of vast historical scope, grounded in exhaustive fact-based research, and suffused with literary references".

Of course the US is ruled by an oligarchy. Almost every system of government boils down to an oligarchy. No monarchy or dictator stays alive for more than five minutes without the support of powerful people around it.
