I'm guessing they're going to platoon him and Cowgill. My thinking is that they think Shuck isn't ever going to be an everyday player so it doesn't matter if he just plays part time.

 

That being said, I'd be baffled if they intend to play him, and not Long everyday at the ML level.

I just think with Long having a good spring and early start to the season, he'd have a better chance at minimizing the loss of production from Hamilton.  Unless they move Calhoun down in the order, we'll have two slappy hitters at the bottom of the order.

 

While Shuck did well last year, he's still nothing more than a 4th outfielder.

Yes, but in is certainly not embarrassing. Those are solid numbers from a rookie, and equates to a very good fourth outfielder. I can do with or without him, but there is absolutely no guarantee that Long would do better in a platoon situation.

Maybe you mistook him for Trumbo that had a .294 obp or Aybar with a .301.

I wish his OPS was that good. It was a little under .700.

He actually had a .697 OPS last year.

I thought you had his OPS a little too high. But a .333 OBP for a guy like him is great. Taylor I know you are not like this, but there is this belief out there that if a player isn't an absolute beast then they suck. There are role players, bench/utility players/platoon players and they are all needed, especially for a championship caliber team.

By the way. Efren Navarro played LF last night. Only the 2nd game, out of 800+, that he's played the outfield.
