Bullpen Issues

Recommended Posts

Are we going to have them again?

My biggest offseason priority was to fix the pen.

I liked the Burnett and Madson moves yet I was still hopeful of adding one more proven guy to the mix.  After that didn't happen, I had hopes that Cordero, Sisk, Cabrera, Maronde etc. could end up earning a spot.  Not so much

Even the expected guys haven't impressed.

Frieri looks like he still struggling with a second pitch.

Downs looks closer to his second half collapse than his first half dominance

Jepsen is still hard to trust

Burnett looked good once and horrible otherwise.

Williams has looked awful.

Richards and Carpenter have turned some heads but Richards should be starting in AAA.  Carp might make the team, but his addition doesn't exactly put the cherry on top of a sundae.

With the collection of 'innings eaters' as the latter 3/5's of the rotation, the bullpen has to be very good to lock things down and I am far from confident that this is the case.  It's gonna be painful to watch another year of leads evaporating and small deficits becoming big ones.

They better get their shit together.

Really?

Really.

I have no problem with fans voicing their displeasures. Hell, I do all the time.

What I don't like to see is fans ONLY voicing their displeasures because to me that's trolling, hatin' and hijacking.

Rubs me the wrong way after investing so much time and passion into this team for over 30 years. I know i'm not alone on this too.

I also have been a fan for over 30 years. I have seen the highs and lows of this organization. When a team is playing like crap a fan has the right to vent their frustration. I am not the one making millions of dollars to play a little boys game.

I am hardly a negative person but I do get upset when a person cannot voice their own opinion.  I love this team very much and want it to beat the crap out of it's division and every team that stands in it's way of winning a World Series Championship.

there is negativity that promotes thoughtful discussion versus a persistent pattern of continuous complaining that is only for the sake of itself.  I am not saying that any of us are perfect at walking that line but some are often well past it and it gets old.

Yep. Exactly my response.

BDavis, enjoy these days because if you've been a fan for over 30 years, we're in an era of Angels Baseball that we've NEVER seen before. Despite missing the playoffs the past few years, we've still been competitive and had good teams and an owner who's willing to win.

You can voice your displeasure with the team in a discussion that warrants it, but when you or anyone else hijack a thread with your negativity, it gets both old and frustrating for others who are engaged in discussion in that thread.

No one is questioning your fandom or love of the team (we all love the Angels here, in one form or another). I think people just don't like when every other post is something negative about the team.

Venting is fine, hell I do it just as much as anyone during the regular season, but I also balance that out with positive things and giving the team/players props when they are doing well. Some people seem to disappear when the team is doing well (not saying you do this).

I hate when people use that line.  It's not a little boys game played by men, it's a man's game played by little boys..

Baseball's history is pretty seedy, it's rife with corruption, racism, and all sorts of social issues little boys have no freaking clue about but that didn't keep dad's from trying to share the game with their children.  The problem of course is that those little boys tend to grow up into opinionated fans that get really lippy on message boards while saying absolutely nothing.

Doc and Chuck both nailed it..  There is thoughtful discussion and then there is the AM32 brand of agenda driven tripe that some try to inject into every thread.  I personally don't care if people rip the team but it's really not much to ask people to engage their brains before hitting the post button.

This bullpen is freaking frightening right now.

I hope people realize that I am a season ticket holder. I have gone to many games and I am a die hard fan. If I have been too negative or critical of this team I apologize.

That's right.  No one is questioning your love of the team.  They are just questioning your lack of conversational conformity in an online message board.

yes.  we are saying that everyone on the board should be the same.

that's the natural extreme conclusion implied.

No doubt that the hitting and Weaver will be there.

Otherwise though, this pitching is soooo 1979.

I actually think the starters will be relatively serviceable or at least as expected.  Wilson will be ok.  Blanton will be a fifth starter and may actually surprise us and Vargas will be pretty good.  Hanson is the wildcard and I am more worried than not, but I really think Richards is ready and will impress more than people think.

I think 2-3 of jep, frieri, downs and burnett will be ok.  ie, the 8th and 9th will be ok, but the 6th and 7th are my concern.  Especially with Scioscia's pattern of pen use in that he saves his top three guys for leads and uses the rest for when the team is down.  Down 1-2 runs with this teams offense is nothing.  We have to give them a chance or having the talent we do get's cancelled out.

With the decent yet not great pitching staff, this offense is gonna need chances to win late, and that means we have to have a good pen.

Downs is not the stud he seemed to be the first half of 2012.  He got pretty much ripped after the 2012 ASB and its carried over into ST.  His fastball is BP on a good day and hitters just wait through his offspeed stuff looking for the fastball.  His role will likely evolve into a lefty hitter specialist.

Frieri should be OK, if not quite as solid as 2012.  Mid relief looks shakey.

This team should score some runs.  We may need them.
