Thoughts on Hector Santiago after two starts?

Recommended Posts

Kept us in the game? He couldn't go 5 innings?

Lol he didn't get shelled. He had 6 K's in 4.1 innings. He certainly didn't get Blantoned out there. He did have some control issues that Mr Mike Butcher needs to work with him on but he's no basket case. We all know what basket case pitching looks like.

There couldn't be a worse comp for Santiago than Blanton.  Santiago is LHed, has good stuff, and can't locate it.

Blanton is RHed has terrible stuff.  so bad it doesn't matter where he locates it.

He's pitched pretty bad so far, but he's only given up 1hr (on a fastball that should never have been called) and has a babip of .407.  He's walked too many guys.

Way small sample.

Also, it appears they've cut out some of his pitches and they've been having him use his sinker a lot which hasn't been working too well.

He's gonna frustrate at times but to compare him to Blanton is just ridiculous.

How is Santiago comparable to Blanton? There is literally no comparison to be made.

Blanton is a strike thrower with mediocre stuff who allowed an absurd amount of home runs. Right handed.

Santiago has great stuff but can't throw strikes and has done a decent job of limiting home runs in his career. Left handed.

We lost by 2 and the Angels didn't score any after he left the game, so he very obviously kept us in the game. Whether it was a good start is another subject.

I think at worst he'll be like Richards last year, great stuff but control problems lead to some rough starts mixed in with good ones. Best case he improves his control some and pitches like an above average #3.

Did he get out of the 5th? I am sorry but whenever a SP can't go five he had a bad day.

Santiago is in a similar place as Richards two years ago.  Throws hard, great stuff, no idea where it's going half the time.

A guy like that is going to look brilliant from time to time and barely make it out of the 4th or 5th at other times (like last night).  Guys like him with raw talent that needs fine tuning are where pitching coaches earn their keep, so if Butcher is ever going to show he does something besides eat sunflower seeds in the dugout, this would be a great time for that.

Title of Thread "thoughts on Santiago after two starts". He has pitched poorly after two starts. Sugar coat is all you want but not going five is a bar day. Now I did say I hope he pitches better as the season goes on. However after two starts he reminds me of Blanton. We are 0-2 just like Blanton. He is responsible for both losses ala Blanton....and he has given us too many HRs ala Blanton. But yes people it is only two games so I have hope.

two more words: two starts.

He's a solid #3 now. He had two starts against a hot hitting Mariners team, where the Angels offense didn't give him a big cushion. Plus he faced James Paxton in both starts.

His next start is against the A's, we'll see how he does.

He didn't make it out of the 5th inning, gave up 5 earned runs, and couldn't hold an early lead. Some control issues? 3 walks in 4.1 innings with a high pitch count means that he was only lucky not to have given up more. Of course, he was helped along by the adroit tutelage of Chris Ianetta who couldn't make a critical play on an important 3rd out K to get him out of the inning. I loved his pitch calling, too. Santiago has Smoak and Hart down in the count - both with 2 outs, and he calls for fastballs? And Santiago actually delivers them? Yeah, Santiago is great.

LOL  He has a 7.71 ERA in his two games. That hardly equates to solid. He was handed a 3 and 0 cushion in the first inning to work with and couldn't protect it. Granted, he was let down by his catcher, who is supposed to be a veteran, but Santiago pitched very poorly.

i'm telling you guys, even with his control issues, if he just gets his pitches down in the zone, then he'll be serviceable to us this year. he's going to walk guys, because he has so much movement. if he can get his stuff down in the zone, then he'll still walk too many guys, but they'll also be swinging at balls they're not going to hit vs. pitches in their eyes.
