I don't see it making much difference. Barring an injury, Wells was likely going to be a spot starter and a bench player. That kind of player generally doesn't make a big difference in the win total.

That seems to imply that Wells would have a -5.0+ WAR while his replacements have a 1.0+ WAR. That doesn't seem very likely.

gets a deserving young guy some additional abs to see if he can hang

may get a little depth for the minors

And some fans let Vernon's history get in the way of the reality of his actual performance as a halo.  Any AAA OFer with average defense provides the level of depth that Vernon Wells does.  So no, it does not weaken the team in any way, shape or form.  If Calhoun hits .230 in limited PA, his defense is better than Vernon so he will have more value.  Any of the OFers that the halos brought to ST have as much value or as least very close to Wells.
