That is a convenient way to frame the argument.  Why should the government dictate how much I can write a check for and to whom I give it?

 

are you concerned at all about donors purchasing candidates and dictating how they vote by how much money they contribute?

Of course, but not as much as I am concerned about the continued loss of personal freedoms. As I have said before, both can be solved by just putting a spending cap on campaigns themselves.

Some countries run candidates' campaign ads on television as public service announcements, and do not allow unbridled spending on campaign ads. The candidates get the free ads but cannot buy more. Something like this would cut down on the influence of special interest groups who flood targeted markets with ads pushing their own agendas.

I would be fine with that as well.   I think they should match whatever is spent on the campaign and send the same amount to a charity.

Another problem with political contributions is the candidate or PAC's ability to spend the money recklessly on just about anything.

 

I cringe whenever I encounter a career campaign staffer or political consultant.  All they do is bounce from one election campaign to the next every year or two.  Seems pretty altruistic at first because there can't be much money involved, right?  WRONG. 

 

The majority of these idiots drive a late-model BMW or Mercedes, wear $1000 suits, and live in upper class neighborhoods.  Gee, I wonder how they could afford those things?
