I sort of like having the veteran dudes around on the bench (McDonald, Cowgill, Stewart) while giving Green, Shuck, etc. more playing time in AAA.  I'm sure they'll be back and forth all year.

We'll see them all soon enough.  Last year we saw 45 different players up here.  I just hope it's not because of significant injury factors.

Looks like they put a premium on gloves off the bench instead of bats.   Cowgill is a better defender than Shuck, at least that's his reputation.  Stewart is a better glove than Green..   That's my guess anyway.

It will be interesting to see how they use Green in Salt Lake.  Probably they will rotate him between 2B, SS, and 3B.  They should work him really hard at SS because that's the position with the least depth.

Shuck turns 27 in June. Seems like a good kid.

However, he wasn't optioned to get everyday PAs. He was optioned as he was beat by a player DFAed by the Mets last year and with his 4th team before he reaches 2 years of service time.

I'm really happy with these moves. The bullpen also gets better once DDLR comes back I think he may replace Kohn. Though from what I've been told. The Angels really liked what they've seen from Kohn this spring. His FB is 94-97 and his slider has improved. 

 

I liked Cowgill over Shuck because he can play all three OF positions. He has more power, some speed and is a righthanded bat off the bench. We already had too may lefthanded bench bats and starters. Stewart, another lefty that provides good D at 3B with power off the bench. 

 

I knew a week ago Grant Green wasn't going to make the team. They want him to get at bats and work on his D. Matt Long will be up if he continues his hot hitting in AAA. He will be the first up if a power OF bat goes down. Maybe even Ibanez.

Looking at the 25 man roster, they must also feel that Albert is 100%. Everybody else on the roster either has no, or minimal experience at 1st and would basically be an emergency backup. I think the original plan was that Albert would DH a couple of times a week and be lifted late in games for a pinch runner. When Pena couldn't hit water if he fell out of an f'n boat and Albert was running the bases like he hasn't since his Cardinal days, that plan must have went up in smoke.

Whether you agree with the logic ir not it seemed obvious to me a month ago that the rh hitter was getting the OF bench spot.

I like the Stewart move.  Breaking camp with him on the big club will motivate him.  Sending him to AAA could have broken him and he would have been out of the org in a month.  Now I think he will do well. 

 

Cowgill is a horrible horrible hitter, but I get keeping him as he was the only CF backup that isn't worth getting everyday at bats in AAA.  Still not a fan though and if he gets more than 100 PA, that's not good.

 

I like keeping Salas and Maronde, but Kohn over Lyon?  I guess I'm just not  a kohn fan.  He's a 3 run hr waiting to happen and I think he'll be the first to go once DDLR comes off the DL.  Still think Lyon would have been a better choice.

 

Although I understand the moves, I feel bad for Long and Shuck.  Not a fan of Shuck, but pretty rough getting sent to AAA after a solid spring and a reasonable 2013.  Poor Matt Long though.  Guy is 27 busting his hump for a shot.  Goes out and hits .400 for the spring and get's sent down.  Wouldn't be surprised to see him struggle a bit in AAA for awhile as a bit of a hangover.  Green as well.  Although I can see how they'd want him to get everyday reps and work on his D.

No right hand hitters off the bench then? Ibanez and Hamilton will need a rest here and there and will probably sit vs lefties every once in a while. The bench needs to be well rounded, and that means it doesn't always have the best talent available
