Well Cano only really has 2-3 prime years left. Maybe less.

 

If Cano knows how incompetent they are then he signed the contract for himself and not to be part of a winning franchise. So it is disingenuous of him to whine and complain about a situation he has helped create.

 

Maybe the Mariners are waiting for their farm system to bolster the lineup but needed to move on Cano now since he was a once in a long time free agent that helps the club in their long term plans. What they can't afford today may work itself out in a season or two. But they made their decision and he made his to strap the team financially for his personal gain. What happens from here on out, he is just as responsible for the results as the Mariners.

You would think the mariners would be in win now mode though. Cano only really has 2-3 prime years left.(maybe less)

As far as Cano is concerned, the Mariners should have been in contention to sign several free agents this offseason. The five-time All-Star also mentioned slugger Nelson Cruz and pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez, who both recently joined the Baltimore Orioles after remaining unsigned through most of the winter.

"If it was up to me, we'd have Santana, Cruz and Ubaldo, too," Cano told the website.
