Angels, Trout discussing six-year, $140M deal

A source tells USA Today's Bob Nightengale that the Angels and outfielder Mike Trout are negotiating a six-year contract extension worth around $140 million.

The prospective deal would keep Trout with the Angels through the 2020 season. Talks of a long-term extension has been reported in recent days, and with Trout's new $1 million salary for 2014 out of the way the two sides can focus on hammering something out. Previous reports from Yahoo! Sports' Jeff Passan had the deal in the seven-year, $150-160 million range, but either way, it seems like only a matter of time before the two sides agree on a deal that will pay the 22-year-old a whole lot of money.

Chuck, your reports are wrong. Angels won't extend Trout because of the Wells trade...then the Pujols signing...then the CJ signing...then the Hamilton signing...then the Blanton signing.....

I see you've talked to Dodgers, Yankees, and Red Sox fans as well regarding Trout and the contract negotiations.

Mancini you don't get it. Those guys only affect who the Angels haven't signed.

The Union probably isn't happy. They would prefer Trout shatter the record for biggest deal in baseball history -- something more than $300 million.

He signs a deal that goes against what the MLBPA wants and his standing with fans will only continue to skyrocket.  That Q score goes up and  the dude would get that money back in endorsement money.

Union should be happy.  He just set a record for a 3rd year players.  He will shatter a record for contracts to a 4th year player.

And when he's 29, and he continues, he could be the first $40 million a year player.

Offer him both. Make that extra year worth $35-$40 with some of it in a bigger upfront bonus. Offer him 6 for $150 or $190 for 7 years. If he wants 6 years he negotiates it up to $155.

6 year extension (10 bonus + 1, 15 20 25 for arb years, 27, 28, 30) = 155 (angels view it as ~22/yr for 7 years)

7 year extension (15 bonus + 1, 15 20 25 for arb years, 27, 28, 30, 30) = 190 (angels view it as ~24/yr for 8 years). Or maybe make that additional 5 bonus as a buyout tied to an team option giving him his 6 year 160 deal or 35 for the last year going into free agency.

Either way, it is going to be viewed as a good thing for the angels all things considered.

He signs the contract.  The next day during a spring training game he collides with Shuck in the outfield fielding a gapper served up by michael roth and blows out both knees

Mantle played most of his career without knees. Even at 75% he was still better than everyone else at hitting a baseball.

Imagine what he could have done with wheels for more seasons.

I was real young when MM played, but I've been watching "hitters of the baseball" play for a while now...

Mays Arron Yaz Banks Frank Robinson...pure hitters, back before the long ball was everything.

Trout is one.

Trout is the kind of player, if he can stay healthy and play another 15-16 years...it wont EVEN be about how much $ he made doing it.

He can re-write the record books, and be the first Angel HOF'r.

Glad the Halos got this one right...hard to imagine what could/would happen if they didn't.
