Nelson Cruz to the Orioles: 1 year, $8 million

At .785 OPS he is tied for fourth in MLB as a DH with Victor Martinez and is only second to Ortiz for home runs. There are not that many quality DHs out there and the Angels didn't really have one particular player at that position last season. Morales did well last year and if the Orioles were looking for a DH they should have went with Morales rather than Cruz that was suspended for PEDs.

That's only because most teams don't usually use the DH for one specific player. It's not a sought out position.

Kendrys' value isn't raised any higher just because his numbers are better than most DHs.

I agree with you that Morales is better than cruz, though.

Kendrys' biggest obstacle to getting a huge deal is David Ortiz.   Hard to argue you are worth more than the one year at 14.1 mil you passed on when the best DH in the league just made 14 mil and is only slated to make 15 mil in 2014.

Ortiz should be disappointed with his contract, Napoli is making more than him. Napoli that had a lower OPS, fewer home runs, over twice as many strikeouts and hit .154 in the World Series compared to Ortiz that hit .688. Remember when people were saying Napoli was going to hit 40 home runs for the red sox? He hit 23 so if he has a good year this season he may make it to that 40 home run number.

Is 4th out of 5 really that special?   the difference between 2nd and 5th in OPS for full time DH's is 0.025.  Roid Rage monster though had a .959 OPS and is making something around $15 million.

Mariners played Boras in textbook fashion.

He posted a nearly identical fWAR too which is pretty impressive given Naps has a very strong defensive season.  I tend to agree Ortiz has been underpaid, but unfortunately for Morales he remains the payroll benchmark.

Kendrys would almost be better off going somewhere he could play 1B full time to not have Ortiz's salary thrown at him.

Get what you're saying but, the AL Average for all at bats at DH was .725.  So, Kendry's is a very strong DH, but again.  David Ortiz blows him out of the water.

I still don't know if it's worth a second round pick. If it was multi year, then it might be.

What the Orioles are hoping is that he has a good year in their hitter friendly park, then he declines arbitration again and signs a multiyear deal elsewhere. Then they are essentially trading a second round pick this year for a higher pick next year.
