no, he just isn't that great of a catcher.  Geez, what is the big deal?  He is a really good hitter.  The biggest mistake the Angels made was not getting him in the line up more when he wasn't catching.  He still caught more for the Angels. 

 

Mathis sucked as a hitter, there is no doubt about that, but he was a pretty good catcher.  They should have used him to spell Naps and found another decent catcher and moved Naps to DH or 1B.

Ask the pitchers he's caught for and the coaches he's played for.  Ask the opposing players he's played against. 

 

If you are a manager and you can pick the guy who is betters stats wise or the guy your staff wants to pitch to, which do you choose?  I know the answer you will pick.  I'll choose the latter.  And Naps wasn't better stats wise either.

because he was the league leader in several caregories, obviously.

That means he was the best, IN THE WHOLE LEAGUE, at the things you listed. Jeff was special for sure.

4-A guy at SLC or is Conger in danger of not making the 25 man roster?

 

Has Scioscia given up on Conger's D behind the plate?

 

Then again, Ianetta spent time on the DL last season -- so it's more likely a 4-A move with a plan to store him at SLC for a quick call up, if needed.
