I'm trying to fix an older HTC Android 2.3.5 phone. The touch screen becomes intermittently unresponsive such that I can't hang the phone up, apps crash, hang, or just don't work properly, plus some other behavior is really weird...the speed test apps I have installed can't determine download or upload speeds anymore, just the ping times. When pressing the Home button, the boot screen sometimes appears for about a minute as if I rebooted. On Monday, it never rang for an incoming call and the voicemail notification and inbound text messages were delayed for hours. The last two days, it's been choking on all inbound and outbound text messages, requiring several attem…

How do you guys feel about home appliances connected to the internet? We just got a new A/C unit and they installed a wi-fi capable thermostat. You can control the heat or A/C via website or smart phone app. I asked an IT buddy what he thought about the security of these things and he's not so sure. At his work, they had several air conditioning compressors burn up by running continuously over a holiday weekend and the network logs pointed to a hack job from China. What's your take on this?

Charge your phone in 30 seconds? A new start-up says it can (Tech) StoreDot Ltd., a Tel-Aviv based start-up, says it hopes to at least make the charging process faster–unveiling Monday a prototype charger that promises to take you battery from a tiny sliver of red to 100%, all in about 30 seconds. See the company’s demo video here. StoreDot was born out of the nanotechnology department at Tel Aviv University and developed its prototype for Samsung’s Galaxy 4. It unveiled the device at Microsoft's Think Next conference in Tel Aviv. StoreDot says it plans to make chargers for other smartphones, too.

Apple recalls millions of iPhone chargers across 37 countries Apple on Friday announced a new program that invites millions of iPhone users across 37 different countries to swap out their iPhone chargers, which may be faulty. According to Apple’s website, the company has determined that one of its iPhone charger models can potentially overheat and pose a safety risk. Of note, chargers that ship with newer iPhone models are not affected by this potential issue. According to Apple, only model A1300 chargers that shipped with the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S pose a potential risk. “Apple has voluntarily introduced a program for customers to exchange the …

Samsung Galaxy F On Saturday, we showed you pictures taken by one of our loyal readers, allegedly revealing the Samsung Galaxy F. As we previously discussed, this is the "premium" version of the manufacturer's flagship Android smartphone, with major bumps in screen resolution, processing speed and the camera. With a 1440 x 2560 QHD resolution on its 5.3 inch screen, a quad-core Snapdragon 805 processor under the hood and a 16MP rear-facing snapper with OIS, many are saying that this is the phone that should have been released as the Samsung Galaxy S5.

So here is the situation. I have this macbook from an estate of a family friend. I want to wipe it of all information and do a simple clean install so the estate can sell it. it's running Mac OS X, version 10.6.8. I don't have any disks, or even the password. It's still logged into the account on the computer. So is there any easy way to do it, or do I have pretty much a useless brick on my hands? The PC laptops were cake.

There’s a major reason why Apple bought Beats that almost no one’s talking about So far we’ve heard a lot of explanations for why Apple decided to spend $3 billion to acquire Beats and most of them have involved getting into the music streaming game or bringing top Beats executive Jimmy Iovine into the fold. However, there is another reason that Apple bought Beats that we may have overlooked: Teenagers actually love Beats headphones. Business Insider points us to a recent survey conducted by Statista showing that Beats headphones are by far the favorite brand of headphones for American teenagers. In fact, more than 46% of all teens surveyed said they preferred…

The wife has a Toshiba Satellite laptop, probably 5 years old or so. I can hear it running but no images on the screen. I've tried forcing a shutdown and restarting. I've also removed the battery and power cord, reinserting and restarting. I've tried to start in safe mode. Nothing has worked. Thoughts from the techies?

With the invasion of our privacy on the internet, and net neutrality on the verge of being killed by the FCC, things like this might start to come in handy in the very near future. "Tails is a kind of computer-in-a-box. You install it on a DVD or USB drive, boot up the computer from the drive and, voila, you’re pretty close to anonymous on the internet. At its heart, Tails is a version of the Linux operating system optimized for anonymity." http://www.wired.com/2014/04/tails/

Five major internet service providers in the US and one in Europe have been accused of abusing their market share to interfere with the flow of the internet for end users. The accusations come from Level 3, a communications company that helps connect large-scale ISPs like Comcast or AT&T to the rest of the internet. According to the company, these six unnamed ISPs are deliberately degrading the quality of internet services using the Level 3 network, in an attempt to get Level 3 to pay them a fee for additional traffic caused by services like Netflix, a process known as paid peering. Big Internet providers accused of slowing traffic

Dating back to the early 2000's as SSD were basically sticks of RAM repurposed as a flash drive, I've alway wanted to get one as my boot drive. But the size was always prohibitive. As the size increased, so did the bloatware and OS's. Even so, when the sizes got good enough to handle all that, the cost was extremely prohibitive (the same cost as, or more expensive than, the computer I was going to install it on). Then, about 6 months ago I decided to check in on everything and found a 512 GB SDD from Kingston for around $150. I hemmed and hawed about it for the intervening time until sometime last week, I had had a few too many and found myself on Amazon (a dangerous …

My wife recently gifted me a new phone to replace my old HTC Thunderbolt. So I have this brand new Droid Max (yes, I wanted the S5, don't even go there) and one of the functions they removed was call blocking. Verizon is more than happy to charge you for the service to block spamming that is supposed to be illegal in the first place, so you can see the link there. Having searched forums for solutions all the tech guys can come up with is add the spammer to the address book and route calls to voicemail. That is not a solution, just another annoyance to deal with as the voicemail is filled with message I later have to sort through and delete. So, annoying as it is to no…

Release date just announced as Oct 7th, 2014, with Standard and Deluxe Editions now available for Pre- Order. This one will be an interesting release as it will be 3 1/2 years since the release of Dragon Age II and 2 1/2 years since BioWare's last release Mass Effect 3. Given the disappointment that greeted Dragon Age 2, plus the backlash BioWare received from both game's endings, they have a lot riding on this release as the success of this release could obviously impact the new Mass Effect game due to release in 2015 and the new IP they rumored to be working on. On the positive side, they are doing their best to max out the capabilities of the Frostbite 3 engine and …
