Annoy the shit out of you with ads so you'll give them more of your money! https://gizmodo.com/youtube-plans-to-frustrate-and-seduce-users-into-paying-1823958024 There’s a lot more people in our funnel that we can frustrate and seduce to become subscribers. Once we do that, trust me, all that noise will be gone, and articles people write about that noise will be gone.

Anyone have either of these? Probably install something similar in the next month or two. Was going to pick up Nest and then saw there was a competing product, ecobee...that appears to be less money. We are fairly tied to the Amazon product set (echo's installed in various rooms) and I see that ecobee is partially funded by Amazon. Thoughts on either of the two?

Google Lens actually shows how AI can make life easier Played with this on google assistant. It's pretty cool. Pretty quick too. But, unfortunately, just IMO, but I looked at some photos of plants. And the results it gave me was it's scientific name and not it's common name.

https://gizmodo.com/you-can-soon-own-a-hal-9000-replica-that-uses-amazon-al-1823648187 Not only can you talk and interact with HAL, recreating some of the movie’s more quotable human-AI repartee, the wall-mounted replica also has Amazon’s Alexa built-in, which you can use to check the weather, turn lights on and off, or ask to open the pod bay doors when HAL refuses.

Anyone familiar with the Surface Pro laptops? I prefer Mac laptops, but I'm thinking it might be useful to have a laptop with a touchscreen that can easily convert to tablet/design mode that will allow me to work/edit photos directly on the screen. Doing some basic research and the Surface models looked intriguing. Have tried some other brands (HP, Asus) in the past and ended up returning them quickly.

Probably the biggest thing preventing me from cutting the cord was NBCSN/FS1/ESPN, so now that they are available on Youtube TV for $35 a month I finally cut the cord. $140/year for NHL, $85/year for MLB, $15 a month for HBO, and $35/month for youtube tv, vs the $200 a month I was paying for Directv. Feels good.

anyone familiar with Carbonite? I've been using CrashPlan for home, they are getting out of that business. Kind of pisses me off...took forever to get my backup up their in the first place. I can migrate to Crashplan for Small business (and not lose most of my backup) for around the same price...or I can transition to Carbonite (and have to recreate my backup from scratch...aka...it's going to take months). If CrashPlan is cutting services for home users...a bit concerned about what it means for their long term health. So...that's what has me pondering moving to Carbonite. Anyone have experience with them?

RED is making a $1,200 smartphone with a ‘holographic display’ Never heard of this company before. But sounds like they are a legit company. Oddly, @red321 might be able to vouch for them since he is on the photo porn side of things. I guess we will see in Q1 if this holographic screen is groundbreaking or not.

Qualcomm to Seek FCC's Approval for Antenna Pattern Testing This is an interesting little article, that brings out the conspiracy theorist in me. I wonder if Qualcomm has developed something that makes sat more portable? This would make the ATT/DirectTV merger make more sense. It may also grow legs on one of the early Dish/Amazon/Tmobile rumors. And maybe why Dish for some reason has been buying up a bunch of spectrum that it hasn't used. If you could make a sat phone into a regular cell phone size. Then those sat companies like DirectTV, Dish, Sirus etc would get a whole new outlook on their future.

LeEco’s proposed $2 billion acquisition of Irvine-based Vizio has fallen through, the companies said Monday, citing “regulatory headwinds.” Instead, LeEco and Vizio will work together to bring Vizio products to China. “We continue to believe that there is great synergy between the two companies,” the joint statement said. LeEco is a holding group for businesses controlled by billionaire Jia Yueting that span electric cars and media to smartphones and TVs. It had announced the agreement to acquire Vizio last July. The deal was intended to create a foundation for branding and acquiring U.S. customers. Bloomberg News reported earlier this month the proposed deal was being…

Now that the congress and the talking yam have decided to save us all from unfair limitations on what ISPs could collect and sell...might be time to think about utilizing a VPN. Anyone have suggestions? I see nordvpn is smart and running a promotion (or at least doing an advertising blitz so their name is getting out there). Anyone familiar with them?

I know you can find bootleg copies around the web, but in general I prefer to purchase movies/content. It used to be with Amazon when you purchased a digital copy, you could download it. It now appears this is no longer an option, you have to use their video player....the same reason I stopped buying any digital content from Apple. So, other options...for those of you who do purchase digital video/movies...where do you buy it from?
