A big assumptions I'm going to make here. Arte does not want to go over the CBT cap. He didn't this year, so I think it's fair to assume he won't want to in the future. So where does it lead us. Right now, I have the Angels for CBT purposes at a conservative $166 million. If it puts you at the current players tab, change it to the CBT salary tab. Say you add Garza for $14 million. Looks good right, $180 million, under the cap. But then look at 2015. 2015 I already have us projected at $146 million. Add Garza's $14 million. That puts us at $160 million. Still wiggle room. Trout can get $10 million in arbitration, or if you sign him to a long ter…

Don't know whether or not this has been discussed on here, but with Frieri now racking up the saves, his salary is going to escalate very quickly in arbitration (as evidenced by the $3.8 mil the Angels gave him to avoid arbitration). So I have to wonder what would happen to his salary if we brought in Balfour and put Frieri back in a setup role. If Frieri remains the closer, we can expect his salary to escalate to $6.5+ mil next year, and $9-10 mil the year after, for a total of $15.5-$16.5 mil over two years. But if we bring in Balfour and give him the closer position, isn't it likely that Frieri's salaries in 2015 and 16 would be far, far less? In other words, m…

Animated .gif by AngelsWin.com Member, Primitive - It's time to act NOW #AngelsFamily, get on Twitter and tweet out a simple #MikeTrout followed by a #FaceOfMLB to vote our own Mike Trout as the Face of Major League Baseball. Trout is currently losing 57% to 43%. If you choose to vote over and over again, you have to change up your tweet each time. Like adding a different number or verbiage to each one. http://mlb.mlb.com/m...2014/faceofmlb/ View the full article

OK, I will say upfront that I am only suggesting this for the pure humor of it. As most of you know, the Dodgers got their own fancypants cable network and they (and Time Warner) are now going through the process of trying to force other local cable carriers to add the channel to their package and charge customers an exorbitant amount of money. This feels like a situation prime to be messed with. I'd like to see an organized effort of Angels fans to petition all the cable companies to NOT carry SportsNet LA or at the very least stick it on a very specific programming tier rather than the basic cable tier like most RSNs. Why? Because RSNs are making all of our …

http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/01/22/report-rays-and-padres-agree-to-trade-involving-alex-torres-and-logan-forsythe/ Am I missing something here? Rays trade a young lefty reliever who had a dominant rookie year holding opposing batters to a .468 OPS for a guy who's got mediocre power & speed and is a career .241 hitter??? Furthermore, Forsythe is arbitration eligible in 2015. Torres not until 2017. I know there's supposed to be other players involved but I would think Torres has a lot more value than this.

POINT - We Need This Dude! Sign Him NOW! By Glen McKee, AngelsWin.com Columnist & Satirist Let me start off by stating the obvious – we need starting pitching like Kim Kardashian needs attention. Maybe even more than that. We’re one starting pitching injury away from the return of Joe Blanton, and the mere thought of that is more horrifying to me than the thought of nuclear war, with the warheads painted to look like evil clowns. I don’t think I’m exaggerating when I say that Joe Blanton getting starts in 2014 is the baseball equivalent of breaking the seventh seal. It can’t happen, because Hell itself follows. You can make legitimate arguments a…

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/01/phillies-sign-bobby-abreu.html "As CSNPhilly.com's Jim Salisbury reported earlier, GM Ruben Amaro Jr. had heard "decent reports on [Abreu]" coming out of Venezuela, leading to the club's interest. According to Amaro, the club was "looking at all the left-handed bats still out there and he's one of them." It remains to be seen, of course, whether the Phils will nevertheless look to add another left-handed bench option in addition to Abreu." This should be...interesting.

Pretty good summary Cuban continued, "David is very self-aware. And I don't think I can emphasize this enough: That's a huge compliment when you tell someone in a position of authority that they're self-aware. Look at Major League Baseball. Bud Selig has no self-awareness whatsoever. He goes on rants, he goes on missions, he takes people on. And he's not self-reflective. I think David is the exact opposite. He will raise the hammer and be forceful, but if something isn't working, he'll back down." http://espn.go.com/dallas/nba/story/_/id/10302405/mark-cuban-dallas-mavericks-wants-fine-david-stern-exits

...to the Angels for 4/50. If that's the case, I say go for it. I'd much rather give Garza 4/50 than Tanaka 7/150 (or whatever he's going to get). I do think Garza gets at least 4/56, probably 4/60 or even 5/70. If I were running the ship I wouldn't go over 4/60 or give him five years unless there's a team opt out. How about 4/56 with a 2M opt out, so 4/58 (or 5/70 if the option is taken).

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/01/minor-moves-bobby-keppel-tommy-manzella.html I'm a little disappointed that the Angels didn't re-sign Coello to a Minor League contract. Robert had shown, in a limited sample size, that moving to a relief role had some potential, especially against right-handed hitters. In the same limited sample size as a reliever in 2013 he had a 12+ K/9 rate in the Majors and a 14+ K/9 rate in the Minors with excellent peripherals (although the actual results weren't as good). Perhaps he wanted to go to the East coast or just explore other opportunities but this seems like an opportunity wasted for the Angels. Maybe I'm reading too much int…
