ANAHEIM — With a chance to win a series Sunday, the Angels instead got blown out. Their 12-2 loss to the Boston Red Sox marked the fourth time in nine games that they’ve allowed at least eight runs, and the third time they’ve lost by at least eight. On the bright side, the Angels are 5-4, which is a pace they’d be happy to keep all season. They won’t be able to do that unless they start to get some better performances, at the plate and on the mound. Starter Chase Silseth gave up three runs in five innings, and then the game got away with relievers José Cisnero and José Suarez on the mound. It got so bad that designated hitter Miguel Sanó was called on to pitch in the …

ANAHEIM — It took a scoring change in the cover of night to finally end Nolan Schanuel’s historic on-base streak to begin his career. The Angels rookie first baseman appeared to reach base in his 36th consecutive game with a walk on Friday against the Boston Red Sox. He was just two games away from the second-best on-base streak to begin a career in MLB history. Or so it seemed. Late Friday, news began to trickle in that an MLB scoring change took a hit away from Schanuel last Saturday at Baltimore. A play that was once ruled an infield hit was ruled an error after an Orioles appeal. Since it was actually the second change to a play, it meant that no more appeals could…

ANAHEIM – Rarely has Reid Detmers been better, a 2022 no-hitter notwithstanding, with the offense finally able to show its appreciation in the later innings Saturday. Detmers tied a career high with 12 strikeouts and the offense scratched out a pair of runs in the sixth inning as the Angels pulled out a 2-1 victory over the Boston Red Sox. The same Red Sox offense that scored eight runs with nine hits in Friday’s series-opening victory struck out six times in the first two innings against Detmers. It was the fourth time in Detmers’ career he has recorded double-digit strikeouts. And just when it looked like Boston’s single run in the third inning might befuddle the Ang…

ANAHEIM — Six games into the season, Mike Trout has one stolen base. That’s one shy of the most he’s had in a season since 2019. One of the narratives that has followed Trout throughout the last five years is a frustration among fans that he is not the same stolen base threat he was at the start of his career. Trout stole 49 bases as a rookie in 2012 and 30 as recently as 2016. As injuries have taken their toll on him, though, Trout, 32, has been anchored to first base. He has stolen a total of six bases over the previous four seasons. “In the past I’ve been kind of holding back a little bit, because obviously the injury history,” Trout said. “But I just want to go ou…

My first thread was a bit silly and tongue-in-cheek fun, so I'll try to contribute something a bit useful or different to the community for my second thread. It's a bit long but hopefully, it's worth your time to consider. Before I mention Arte, I need to give some context: One of the engineers at a previous job taught me about a "Ben Franklin chart," or so he called it. He explained that Ben Franklin would use this weighted scale chart to determine which option was the best out of several possible options. He would create a column for each option (ex: determining whether to live in city A or city B). Then on a new row under that, he would list all of the…

ANAHEIM — The Angels provided an Angel Stadium sellout crowd of 44,714 with plenty of entertainment, but not a victory. After trailing by four runs in the second inning, the Angels rallied to tie the score in the sixth and seventh innings before losing, 8-6, to the Boston Red Sox in their home opener on Friday night. Logan O’Hoppe’s sixth inning grand slam pulled the Angels even, and they had a few chances to take the lead after that, but they couldn’t do it. José Soriano, the Angels’ flame-throwing multi-inning reliever who had been dominant in his season debut last weekend, gave up single runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth. Jarren Duran, a product of Cypress High…

Hello, this is my first new topic since signing up. I was thinking about when Taylor Ward faceplanted into the wall. Obviously everybody knows that he wasn't the same after that. But then I started thinking about how he got hit in the face with the ball last year and whether he'd ever be the same again, being traumatized twice in 2 years like that. Strangely, it would almost appear like getting hit in the face has reverse-concussed him, if that's even a thing! Like it somehow knocked him back into his old self. Btw, fun random fact: Taylor Ward's wife's name......is Taylor.

TEMPE, Ariz. — This is a critical spring training for Jo Adell. Again. Adell, who was once one of the top prospects in baseball, has seen his stock slip over the past few years of struggles in the big leagues. It’s created the narrative that each new season was his chance to finally turn the corner. Now, though, the added element is that Adell is finally out of options, which means the Angels won’t be able to send him to the minors. He is still 24 years old and talented enough that he would certainly be claimed if placed on waivers. “The way the game goes, you’re gonna be where you’re supposed to be at the end of the day,” Adell said. “Right now it’s Angel red. I expe…

Can we just have fun? I'm not telling people how to "fan" or whatever, but constant negativity is getting quite old and tired. Yes, Arte sucks and needs to sell the team. But how about we just enjoy some Angels baseball? I see probably more negativity on social media than I do here. However, it's just growing tiresome.

ANAHEIM — If only the Angels could get a whole season out of the Luis Rengifo who they have seen for stretches at the end of the last two seasons, they might really have something. Rengifo, 27, enters this season as the Angels’ primary backup at second base, third base and shortstop. He figures to get plenty of playing time, even if it’s not at one position. The larger question is which Rengifo is going to show up when he’s at the plate. In 2022, Rengifo had a .572 OPS through his first 112 plate appearances, and then a .764 OPS over his last 399. Last season he had a .590 OPS through his first 226 plate appearances, followed by a .980 OPS over the last 219 trips to th…

By David Saltzer, AngelsWin.com Senior Writer First and foremost, since we are opening the season in Baltimore, if you are reading this article, please take a moment to think upon all those who died on the Francis Scott Key Bridge. Thank you. Tuesday, before the Angels-Dodgers last game of Spring Training, Angels GM Perry Minasian met with season ticketholders for his annual “Chalk-Talk”. The event was moderated by Trent Rush, who did a great job, and asked most of the questions, although some fan questions were allowed. Perry spoke for about 45 minutes to the crowd and addressed the offseason and Spring Training. My cousin Ken and I attended and sat behin…

MIAMI — The Angels opened their season last Thursday, but for Zach Neto it really began Tuesday night. More specifically, in the sixth inning Tuesday. After a rookie season in which he showed promise offensively and defensively, Neto began 2024 with four forgettable games. He was 2 for 13 and made physical and mental mistakes at shortstop. After he struck out in his first at-bat Tuesday night, Neto had a moment of self-reflection. “That’s it,” he told himself, as he recalled Wednesday morning. “Let’s stop messing around. Let’s get after it.” In Neto’s next trip to the plate, in the sixth inning, he yanked a double into left field, setting up a two-run inning that pro…

MIAMI — The first time Patrick Sandoval took the mound, everything went wrong for the Angels. The second time, everything went right. The Angels beat the Miami Marlins 10-2 on Wednesday afternoon, an impressive full-team effort that ran their winning streak to four games. The Angels bear little resemblance to the team that played Opening Day, when Sandoval was knocked out in the second inning of a game the Angels lost by eight runs. In the second game the Angels lost by nine runs. Manager Ron Washington then held a team meeting to make sure the players remained upbeat, and they’ve won every game since. It was night and day for Sandoval, in particular. Sandoval’s fir…

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Tyler Anderson wants to return to his philosophy of pitching this year. “My whole life has been trying to make good pitches, not make my pitches good,” Anderson said. The catchy phrase refers to the difference between thinking about how a pitch works against a certain hitter in a certain game situation, and simply measuring the velocity or the break or the spin of the baseball. As Anderson looks to rebound from the worst year of his career, he said one of the points of emphasis is not to chase Trackman numbers. “Less chasing stuff, which I felt was the M.O. last year, as opposed to pitching, which is what I like,” Anderson said. Anderson, who was …
