The Anaheim City Council will vote Tuesday on whether to enter lease negotiations with the Angels that could keep the team in the city through 2057 and allow them to drop the "of Anaheim" part of their name, according to a Friday report by the Los Angeles Times. View the full article

Looks like my fears from last November were prescient. A couple quotes: "Dipoto is now in the situation where he must re-sign Greinke. If he doesn't, he's going to be scrambling all offseason to sign and/or trade for at least one starter, probably two - and the Angels farm system is already depleted, easily in the bottom third in all of baseball." "One could envision a worst-case-scenario in 2013 where Greinke signs elsewhere and neither Pujols or Wilson have better years." This happened. Greinke is gone, Wilson has had a similiar, maybe slightly better year, and Pujols was quite a bit worse. "He also has to figure out what to do with Vernon Wells and …

And the boys sure came through tonight in a big way. I mean, look. I hate Angel losses as much as any other diehard Angel fan. But, this opportunity is too good to pass up. A top 5 position would go a long way toward rebuilding the farm system. And, although there are no guarantees that the team will be able to get a gem of a player, keep in mind that there were 22 teams that could have prevented us from drafting the greatest baseball player to ever live. And, at this point winning only hurts us. If we're gonna suck like this, we might as well make it worthwhile. If I were Scioscia, Blanton would appear in every remaining game, either starting or pitching the 8th or 9…

By Joe Haakenson, AngelsWin.com Contributor - AUG. 30, 2002 GAME 134 - ORIOLES AT ANGELS ANAHEIM -- Mickey Callaway could walk through the concourse at Edison Field and it's doubtful anyone would give him a second look. Even wearing an Angels uniform and standing on the pitcher's mound, he doesn't strike fear into opposing hitters. What Callaway does do, though, is throw strikes. Effectively mixing off-speed pitches with a fastball that only reaches between 86-89 mph, Callaway took a no-hitter into the sixth inning against the Baltimore Orioles and earned his first major league win since 1999 in the Angels' 6-2 victory before 29,959 fans. The crowd total was near…

By Joe Haakenson, AngelsWin.com Contributor - AUG. 31, 2002 GAME 135 - ORIOLES AT ANGELS ANAHEIM – The Angels put the game away early with a six-run second inning, allowing starting pitcher Ramon Ortiz to settle in and go the distance with a five-hit shutout in a 9-0 victory over the Baltimore Orioles before 38,563 at Edison Field. Ortiz gave up five hits – all singles – striking out six and walking none while improving to 11-9. The Angels got offense from all over, led by Orlando Palmeiro’s four hits. Darin Erstad had three hits, Bengie Molina hit a three-run homer and Adam Kennedy homered. The win allowed the Angels to keep pace with Oakland, which wo…

Is he an ace again yet? He's now had two strong starts following the two poor starts that caused him to lose his ace status.

Joe gave the team three days off batting practice for this series against the Angels ... during a close division race which finds them in the hole a few games. Players were also allowed to come to the ball park late ... which most of them obliged. What do you think?

Interview conducted by David Saltzer, AngelsWin.com Senior Writer One of the Orem Owlz who has taken the team by storm is Michael Fish. Not only has he gotten off to a fast start, he's showing an excellent eye at the plate. He's got power. He's got speed. And he has defense. As of the time of this writing, he's sporting .382/.433/.740 line on the season (split between the AZL Angels and Orem Owlz). Coming from New York, his favorite team was the Yankees. As he notes in the interview, the emphasis was on the word "was". He's an Angels player now, and is working hard to make the team in Anaheim. We recently caught up with Michael Fish to find out more about this up …

Jason Vargas may have finally regained his form. On Thursday afternoon, in the finale of a three-game series at Tropicana Field and in his fourth start since missing nearly two months with a blood clot, the veteran left-hander hurled seven scoreless innings against the Rays, leading the Angels to a 2-0 victory and a series win. "More than a month after the Phillies reportedly agreed to a six-year, $48MM contract for Cuban right-hander Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez, the team has officially announced that they have signed him to a drastically reduced three-year, $12MM contract with a vesting option for a fourth season." Wow, what a drop off in money. Something has to be up with his health

Interview Conducted by David Saltzer, AngelsWin.com Senior Writer Last winter the Angels hired Bill Richardson to manage the Orem Owlz, their advanced short-season team. Taking over for Tom Kotchman, Bill was given the tough assignment of breaking in and molding many of the youngest and newest players in the organization and to help them adjust to the rigors of playing professional baseball. Prior to taking over for the Owlz, Bill had spent the past 5 years managing in the Texas Rangers organization. However, his route to managing professionally was not direct: like some of his players, he did not get the call to the pros until later in life. We'll let Bill explain h…

By Glenn McKee, AngelsWin.com Staff Writer - Way back in mid-March, long before this season was in the crapper and there was still some optimism – Hamilton is gonna bounce back after and we’ll have four guys hitting 30+ HR this year! – I joked that it was never too early to give up on a season. After seeing the results of a dozen or so spring training games, I was already worried. It was that same worry long-time (as in, pre-2002) Angels fans know well, having lived with it for just about every season. A small part of me was already giving up on the season, knowing how it would end – the same was most of my seasons rooting for the Angels (since about 1979) h…

As many of you know, last week I was in Orem conducting interviews with the players and coaches to try and get to know many of the most recent additions to our organization. I had a great time, and there is a LOT of talent on that team! Angels fans, if you haven't started following them, you should--many of these guys will make names for themselves as they move up the organizational ladder. I won't be surprised if several of them even get a jump over Burlington next year and go straight to Inland Empire. While there aren't many games left on their season, I would highly suggest tuning into to their radio broadcasts at www.oremowlz.com and even joining the live chat (w…

Of course, what else is new? 6.00 ERA in 4 previous starts (18 innings) earlier this year Do we even have advance scouts, Arte? Fortunately for these clueless hitters (Jimenez excepted), Vargas has rolled since leaving the bases loaded in the first inning.
