So, we are down to 10 games and, for the Angels to finish with a record above .500 for the first time since opening day, they need to have a robust 8-2 record (or 7-3 to finish exactly at .500). Say what you want about the awfulness this season, for how far under they were at one point, .500 or above would be a tremedous accomplishment and end the season on a high note. The last 10 games are broken down thusly: 3 against M's, 3 against A's, and 4 at TEX I think the M's can be taken in a sweep and A's can be had 2-1 but the real challenge may come in TEX. Unless there is dramatic slide, the A's are the AL West champs but TEX is and will be fighting for their …

What are your memories of the stretch drive and the glorious run through the playoffs that year? I remember us taking it to pretty much everybody until all we needed was one more win to eliminate Seattle, and we couldn't do it for a long time. Memories of previous collapses had me nervous as hell until we won at Texas behind Lackey with like four games to go. I remember thinking we would lose to the Yankees but I hoped we would make a good showing, especially after blowing the first game. We won the second and I thought we had a chance. We won the third and I thought "don't do this to me again, guys". Then we had that unbelievable inning in the clinching game. I w…

All I have kept hearing about the past few years is how bad the farm system of the Halos have been. Well, how bad could it be when it's produced players like Trout and Calhoun?

Awesome. He's had a really nice bounce back season in a tough park and league to pitch in. Great guy too! For those in attendance two years ago, he was at our Spring fan fest '12. He hung out with us from the beginning till the end. He was a great interview too.

By Joe Haakenson, AngelsWin.com Contributor - SEPT. 19, 2002 GAME 153 - ANGELS AT A’S OAKLAND – The circumstances surrounding Thursday afternoon's game between the Angels and Oakland A's might have indicated it had some added significance. First place in the American League West was on the line and the teams won't meet again in the regular season. There also was the issue of the tiebreaker. If the teams finish the regular season in a tie, the division winner is determined by their records head-to-head. But after falling, 5-3, to the A's before 27,435 at Network Associates Coliseum, the Angels (95-58) shrugged it off as just another game. Just another loss. It…

Angels ace Jered Weaver was scratched from Friday night's start against the Seattle Mariners because of tightness in his forearm, but the team is hopeful the right-hander will return to the mound Wednesday against Oakland. So today FanGraphs introduced two new "stats", "Offense" and "Defense". The former calculates runs above/below average for offensive and base running ability. The latter calculates runs above/below for defensive ability modified by position played. I wanted to see if there were any players who were truly "replacement level" (i.e. close to 0 in both offense and defense) from 2010 to 2013 (the closest I found were Everth Cabrera and Emilio Bonifacio by the way) so I sorted from highest to lowest using just the offensive stat and then went to where the list is close to zero and looked to see if any players were also close to '0' on defense. However when I first loade…

Designated hitter ties the score with a two-run home run in the top of the ninth inning and drives in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly in the 11th. OAKLAND -- Like the Angels, Josh Hamilton has been in season-salvaging mode for the last month or so. View the full article

I mentioned this in another thread, but just an FYI: AAV of a contract counts toward the luxury tax threshold and not what you are paying that year. So for 2013, the Angels luxury tax number that takes AAV into account was 177mil with the tax being above 178. So they barely made it. the 2014 luxury tax is above 189. The halos shed vargas yet Arb increases likely push the number to a similar range. Call it 180mil. If they sign Trout to a long term deal, the AAV will likely be 20mil or more which would push them well above the threshold. Their tax rate for 2014 is 17.5%, so anything that counts above 189mil, they would have to pay that extra additi…

The class with which Mariano Rivera's Fenway Park farewell was handled contrasts with Angels' fumbled opportunity with Derek Jeter in 2011. This column is a high-five to Boston Red Sox fans and their baseball organization. It is also a wrinkled brow and shake of the head to the same groups of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. I don't want to do it. I'm not even sure it's necessary. I'd like to know who wants to keep him, would like him to stay but feel it's necessary to trade him, or just want him gone.

Angels left fielder J.B. Shuck had what he admitted was the defensive game of his life Wednesday. He gunned down Chris Young trying to stretch a single into two bases in the second, he leaped near the wall to snag Young's liner in the fifth and he dove full extension to rob Derek Norris of extra bases in the eighth. By Joe Haakenson, AngelsWin.com Contributor - SEPT. 18, 2002 GAME 152 - ANGELS AT A’S OAKLAND – On Tuesday night, the Oakland A's hitters didn't get close enough to smell second base. Wednesday night, they tap-danced on it. Not a single A's baserunner got as far as second base in the Angels' 1-0 win Tuesday, so they took out their aggressions on Angels starter Mickey Callaway in a 7-4 win Wednesday night before a sellout crowd of 50,730 at Network Associates Coliseum. The A's pounded four home runs, including three in a six-run fourth inning that turned a 4-1 Angels lead into a 7-4 deficit. Mark Ellis, Eric Chavez and Jermaine Dye each hit solo homers, but th…

With his 26th homer today, Mike Trout now is on pace for an even more legendary season than he was already putting together. He can potentially finish 2013 with this stat line. .330+/.440+/.575+ 1.000+ OPS 200 H, 10 3B, 40 2B, 30 HR, 30+ SB, 100 RBI, 100 BB, 110+ R Take a moment and let this sink in. That has NEVER happened before in MLB history.

Flip that bitch and the Angels are leading the WC race. 9-21 v. Tex and Oakland is awful, but 18-17 against Houston and Seattle is just as bad.

One hit in his last five games (1-14, .071 BA). Dude sucks. Of course he's walked 9 times, so his OBP is .435. But I'm wondering if he's finally tiring - last year he was comparatively sluggish the last couple months, so maybe we're finally seeing that with a couple weeks left. Hopefully he can turn things around so that his BA stays above .330 for the year.

Ernesto Frieri has become a master of the multi-inning save, whether or not his manager likes it. The Angels closer has converted seven, including a six-out save against the Astros on Sunday. That easily leads the Majors. View the full article

Grant Green's exposure to third base at the Major League level will have to wait until at least next season. Green, facing the team that drafted him four years ago, started at second base for the Angels on Wednesday, but isn't expected to get much more time there now that Howie Kendrick is back from the disabled list. By Robert Cunningham, AngelsWin.com Contributor - Sigh, the offseason is near. What a bitter disappointment this year was, without a doubt. Missed opportunities abound mixed with some signs of hope. Just not nearly enough to get us into the playoffs that have been absent from our lives since 2009. However, just as every October ends, a new April is shortly around the corner. The time in between can really make a difference in the look, feel, and confidence of a team and can dramatically improve or degrade a team’s chances of success in the following season. Without further ado, let’s take a look at the Angels, their current state, and where we hope they will…
