At the very least, this off season stands to be very interesting. Limited budget potentially being up against the CBT Lot's of pitching needed with most position players in play for trades A high end Asian pitcher about to get posted Not much farm system to play with A new Trout contract Under performing and injured players coming back to form. Questionable front office/management friction or philosophical issues Gonna take a fair amount of creativity and quite a bit of activity to round this group into a more well rounded squad and I am looking forward as to how they proceed. Honestly, I'm kind of excited.

Just some food for thought for today. Here are the 2011-2013 OPS splits (in the format of vs. LHP/vs. RHP) for the following four players currently on our 40-man roster: Grant Green: .847/.782 Luis Jimenez: .786/.824 Tommy Field: .798/.778 Chris Nelson: .854/.910 Clearly none of these numbers have translated (yet) to the Big Leauges but would the Angels be better off with a platoon at 3rd base in 2014? Can a platoon of say Grant Green and Chris Nelson provide an OPS over .800+ next season? What about Luis Jimenez's leadership and energy? Would it be better to have a platoon of Field (higher OBP) and Jimenez (probably better defense from the both of them…

The Angels believe there may be some upside left in Chris Volstad. And though they aren't counting on him to be more than a Triple-A starting pitcher next season, his age, his size, his Draft history and his clean bill of health made them feel he was at least worth taking a shot on. Ruben Amaro finally hired a guy who understands "advanced" stats that aren't on the back of a baseball card: http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/11/06/the-phillies-hired-their-stat-guy/ Perhaps certain posters will take this as a sign to embrace the reality that advanced stats are a permanent fixture to the game and play a crucial role in deciding a player's value.

Ken_Rosenthal 4:07pm via Tweetbot for Mac Sources: Rick Eckstein joining #Angels’ coaching staff. I do not yet know position. His brother David won World Series with Angels in 2002. I'm guessing he will be asst. hitting coach. This is awesome.

It should be understood that I'm in no way advocating that the Angels should trade him. Trout's trade value may be at it's highest this off season. Coming off back 2 back seasons with a 10+ WAR value. Personally, I don't care for the stat but it has it's uses. He has one free year and 3 arb years left before he becomes a free agent. I'm fairly sure the Angels will try to sign him to a 5+ year deal ... but what if he declines? If you were going to trade him ... I think a NL team would be best. Such as the Nationals/Phillies/Mets. In reality what could Trout bring to the Angels in a trade? btw this is just for fun

It's a possibility if they can't hammer out a short term deal with their current venue. Might make it worth going on a road trip.

What are some buy low candidates on the FA market that you can see as being a cheap low risk/high reward type player? Kurt Suzuki Johan Santana Mark Ellis Obviously Santana's arm not falling off is key, but when he's healthy (yes I understand he hasn't been for a while) he's a pretty darn good pitcher. I'm sure he's going to look to get a chance to start somewhere, but if we were able to bring him in on a low cost deal as a depth piece... He'd be better than Blanton, that's for sure.

I'd really like the Angels to sign him him as a FA this off-season. The Indians discovered a mechanical flaw in his delivery that got him back to his days when he was a true #1 with the Rockies, and it showed as he dominated from June on. Overall, Jimenez went 13-9 this past season with a 3.30 ERA over 32 starts and 182 2/3 innings. He struck out 194 batters and had a 1.33 WHIP. For the money, I think adding Jimenez and Vargas and shoring up the BP may be the best route to go this offseason. Tanaka is going to cost a fortune and isn't a sure thing in the big leagues, and David Price is going to cost an arm and a league. Unless of course we can get him for the cos…

Joe Nathan voided his option and the Rangers didn't give him a qualifying offer. He'd be a serious upgrade at closer and wouldn't cost a draft pick.
