The simple answer is release him. But in baseball nothing is simple for the Angels. Here are some factors that I think have to be considered before the majority will get their wish. Blanton is owed $8.5 million, $7.5 million this season, and $1 million buyout for 2015. From my estimated opening salary, the Angels sit at around $147.9 million right now. More importantly, due to chatter that the Angels don't want to get in the competitive balance tax area, the Angels are at an estimated $155.9 million, with the tax kicking in at $189 million. That leaves an average annual value of $33.1 million that we can spend. The needs of the team are 2 starting pitc…

Barry Enright pitched into the 8th inning and gave up two runs on five hits as his team dropped a 2-0 game on Sunday. Enright fell to 4-2 with Hermosillo in the Mexican Pacific League. He is tied for second in the league in wins and has posted an ERA of 2.36 over six starts. The league is somewhere between AA and AAA level. Barry has been terrible in AAA, including 7-7, 7.12 with Salt Lake City in 2013, and even worse in two stints in the bigs with the Angels.

By Jessica Melendez, AngelsWin.com Staff Writer - This is not an unbiased article. Quite honestly, even the discussion of a Trumbo trade turns me immediately into Grumpy Cat: The fact that I admit my blatant bias, however, doesn't negate the truth of what I am about to say. First, some cold, hard facts. The Angels need pitching like a drowning person needs air. We have a few players with really stinking big contracts. Players who may or may not produce...but that’s almost irrelevant, you got money like that tied up, you gotta play it. Which leads us to... The Angels do not have a lot of cash to go out and buy Free Agent Pitching. The Angels also …

November 20: Reserve lists filed (Rule 5) for all Major and Minor League levels Who do we protect from rule 5 draft? Definitely Grichuk. Currently 39 on 40-man roster. Who goes?

Trading Trumbo and Kendrick for young pitching helps the team but if they're able to get Cano should they try? His contract demands were crazy but if they could get him for somewhere between what they signed Hamilton for and what they signed Pujols for are they crazy for adding his bat? The guy hits for average and Power. Best hitter on the Yankees. Salary cap would have to not be a concern going forward but hey it's only money. .

Let's face it: Jason Vargas is the definition of average. He is good for an ERA around 4.00, plus or minus a few points, and 2ish WAR per season. Not bad, but nothing to be excited about - and certainly not the type of pitcher that you want more than one or two of if you hope to contend for the playoffs. He's a solid #4, no more or less. The point is, if he's Dipoto's plans for a #3 starter, we're in trouble. Richards should be consider the #5 at this point, even though I think he can out-perform Vargas this year. Weaver and Wilson are both #2s, maybe a #3 in Wilson's case. So the Angels need at least one more starter of Wilson's caliber to give them a solid starting …

Three Angels players (Cron, Borenstein, and Bedrosian on the lists: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/very-final-statistical-report-for-the-arizona-fall-league/ The numbers are heavily regressed due to the smaller sample size but it was nice to see the Angels well represented.

To me, the worst contract in baseball is Alex Rodriguez's $275 M deal with the Yankees. Pujols is producing how he has the last two years isn't a great investment, and some may call it an albatross, but I look at the quality of the individual, and I don't think Pujols comes close to the wreck in Yankee-land. I also think the Ian Kinsler and Elvis Andrus contracts for the Rangers are really bad and are not talked about in this context because they were for less dollars overall. When the Andrus contract goes into effect, it effectively neutralizes a trade asset that teams would've really liked to have. The Rangers are not going to get as much for Jurickson Profa…

I find it interesting that there are a handful of new Cuban defectors that have escaped and are trying to establish residency: http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/11/cuban-shortstop-arruebarruena-defects.html . Raicel Iglesias, a RHP was also just reported as a defector. The one that most interests me I think is Erisbel Arruebarruena who is reportedly a defensive "magician" at SS. If he became available it would make moving Aybar more palatable in my mind.

The Arizona Fall League was once again chock full of exciting young talent, though the league was younger than it typically has been, as more players who have yet to play above Class A participated. That's reflected in the Top 20 AFL Prospects list, which includes four teenagers. View the full article

What kind of contract will he expect after a disappointing few starts in Texas? He's surely looking for a multi-year guarantee, but won't cost a draft pick so that should help his value. Hmm.

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/washington-nationals-jordan-zimmermann-ian-desmond-contract-extensions-high-price-111713 "The Phillies have a long-standing interest in Peter Bourjos and would love to have him, but they don't have the young pitching the Angels would want back in a trade, FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports. The Phils would have to get a third team involved to work out a deal, or forget Bourjos entirely and focus on other outfield candidates; Rosenthal suggests Grady Sizemore as a bench possibility."

Saw that the Padres may actually move Headley this offseason if they can't get an extension done. What would it take to get a player of his caliber off a down year one year before free agency? Padres have young pitching. Yet I'd think they'd be interested in Richards. Trumbo also likely appeals as does Bourjos. I'd be hesitant to trade all three, but Trumbo, Richards, and Cowart... that I'd do for Headley. I think the Angels have as many issues offensively as they do defensively. And pitching isn't the only place they need to improve. Follow this up with a trade of Kendrick or Aybar or both for pitching prospects like Aaron Sanchez and/ or Carlos Martinez. Then you …
