All-Star Posts: 2042 Location: Rancho Palos Verdes, California | This off season doesn't offer a great selection of Free Agents. It seems you either have to pay big bucks (and draft picks) or make a decision to stand pat/tinker with the line up. The Angels appear to be at a crossroads, having to decide to go big or go home. What do you think?

What do you think? For the record I chose sign a big bat (Fielder in particular) because the draft class next year isn't particularly strong and I say lose draft picks now and once we have Fielder we can begin rebuilding our farm through trades/modest upgrades starting NEXT off season. I say go big and then settle in with a contending team (Weaver, Haren, Fielder, Bourjos, Trout, et. al.).

Big League Angels Posts: 1151 | I wish hanley was available, we could trade for him and move him to 3rd. Too bad he won't be with the Marlins moving into a new stadium, the marlins can't rebuild. They need to get people in the stadium and they won't be able to do that if they rebuild.

All-Star Posts: 2772 Location: Anaheim, CA | I'd say honestly the only real "ALL OUT" option we should consider is Fielder, but even that isn't obviously ideal for us given both our financial and personnel situation. We'd probably have to trade Trumbo to make it work if Morales ends up being healthy, or else we'll have Fielder, Morales and Trumbo on all competing for playtime in the same positions. Not to mention the logjam already with the outfield, making it even worse if we have to start playing Trumbo in RF to get him in the lineup.

All-Star Posts: 3938 Location: Orange County | Vegas Halo Fan - 2011-11-05 4:56 PM thats probably true, but thats pretty much how it is now. 5, 10 years ago, studs were available every winter, because deals basically lasted 4 years. Then manny signed with boston. And arod signed with texas. That ushered in the current era of bloated, long term deals. So today, kust about every player of substance is seeking 5 years minimum. About the only free agents who would make any impact would bog us down with huge contracts for the next 7-8 years. Wells for four is bad enough. So you have to decide whats worse, 4 good and 3 mediocre years from a plus player? Or 3 to 4 years of decent years from a sub-star player? Weve shot ourselves paying star money to the latter. We need to sign a star player for once. Tex would have been that guy. Hed be an expensive DH the last year or two, bit were usually good enough overall that one or two guys like that makes us a legit WS contender.

Signing Fielder is doable, the contract can be set up in the Angels' favor as money comes off the books. And if that does happen, the trade chips are there with Trumbo, Bourjous, Izzy, Callaspo. Not saying those guys should all be moved, but any combination could be moved to address 3B or a fifth starter for the rotation. In that type of scenario Bourjous would be replaced by Trout. Trumbo would be replaced by Fielder. Izzy would be replaced by Amarista who can play OF as well. Callaspo would be replaced by the 3B we traded for. We'd have to give up some minor league talent as well, but whatever. The beauty of FAs is they replace lesser options which become trade chips.

BTW, anyone is available for the right price, even Zimmerman and Trout. However I do generally agree that Zimmerman would be a difficult acquire and may not be worth it. I was just throwing names out in the middle of the arena.

Salt Lake Bees Posts: 705 | I said "rebuild." I know it's not popular and the evidence is there that this team isn't far off. They DID win 86 games last year. However, there's a lot of old, bloated players on this team. The peak years guys don't appear to be that special. Aside from Trout and Bourjos and maybe Segura, I don't see any top flight talent coming soon. This team is not in a great position to improve via trade and the money flow's been shut off with the Wellls deal. That leaves small money moves on average or older, riskier players. It's a tough position to succeed in when the team the Angels are chasing just had back-to-back appearances in the World Series and still has a wave of talent about to hit. It may be a bit pessimistic, but I just don't see how the flaws of a poor offense and hitting philosophy can be papered over for another year.

For what it is worth I really hope the Angels do not sign Pujols unless it is at some stupid discount like 5/100 or something.
