I e-mailed Ch. 13 asking why they cut away from the Angels game to a boring but very colorful test pattern precisely at 5 p.m. My guess is that they had to give back the satellite at 5.
I will let you know of their response, if I get one. No one answered the phone there Sunday.

Meantime, they can be reached at programming@la13.com

Nothing they could do if it was a blackout issue. However prior warning would have been nice.

I think LTH nailed it. I'm glad I didn't have to see it. I assume Ellis got a basehit? Don't tell me he walked in a run.

Ok People, Look, it is not that channel 13 lost the broadcast. ESPN has all broadcast rights for Sunday night baseball which begins at 5:00pm local time and therefore channel 13 is required by law to stop telecasting any game in progress. Channel 13 is not at fault here. It just is what it is. Notice all baseball games begin at noonish or 1:00 on Sundays and that's so they don't run into this problem but obviously when a game goes into extra innings, it becomes a problem.

I don't think it's the LAW. I'm sure MLB and ESPN can change that clause in the contract. How about any game in progress does not get the boot.

Well I agree they could of flashed something on the screen as a reminder but I looked at my clock at 4:55 and said "crap if this doesn't hurry, we are going to miss the end" and sure enough 5:00, end of broadcast. Maybe they think everyone knows about the blackout restriction but a warning still would of been nice. That's what the complain should be to channel 13, not that they disappeared. That part was out of their control.

ESPN not only controls the east coast hype over the west, but now control west coast games on TV. They are more powerful than God.

It's law according to the contracts that have been agreed upon and signed by all parties and yes it could be changed if everyone agreed but obviously why would ESPN agree to it? They own the market for Sunday night baseball.

They need to kill the blackout issue if it is a game in proces and in extra innings. There is the Heidi precedence for them to use where the broadcast should not be terminated until the actual event is completed. It's just unfair for the fans to have their game terminated because of a single conflicting game under a supposed exclusivity contract.

Could you image what would've happened if this happened to the Yanks, Sox, or Cubs. I bet MLB put a clause in TV contracts that their games NEVER be touched.

what would be wrong with showing a photo while continuing the audio broadcast?

surely there has to be a simple solution for a situation like this. it's not like millions of fans are going to abandon espn over an extra inning game every once in a while.

oh, wait. we once had a tie game in the all star game, which is also the determining factor for which team gets home field advantage in the world series. cancel the hope for a "simple solution".

I think you're contradicting yourself there. You say ESPN has all broadcast rights for Sunday night games which begin at 5pm local time. (but i think its ET)

I think its also stated on various websites that ESPN has broadcast rights for all games that start at 5PMET.

This game started at 1pm which would make it 4PMET, I don't think that ESPN had any rights for this game at all, since it started before 5PMET

I still believe someone at KCOP messed up, but on a good note we missed the GS.

Edit: MLB.TV states this also

• National Live Blackout (Regular Season): Due to Major League Baseball national exclusivities, for each Saturday game beginning April 19, with a scheduled start time after 1:10 PM ET or before 7:05 PM ET, and for each Sunday game that begins after 5:00 PM ET, all scheduled webcasts of such games will be blacked out.

I could be misinterpreting this but it fits what mi saying. I could be 100% wrong though.

Here's the thing though... if ours blacked out because of this ESPN issue... then why didn't Oakland's telecast black out?

I'm sure it's just a KCOP issue.

I mean, what if the game went on for 20 innings? You can't just NOT show it.

Funny that it was a Dodgers game on ESPN to boot (no pun intended). If it was indeed an ESPN thing, they screwed the west coast again by airing a game by...the west coast Dodgers! GASP!

L.A. Times says it was a satellite issue:

"OAKLAND -- Heidi, meet Smilla. Smilla . . . Heidi.

It probably won't live in infamy for decades, but Channel 13 had its own Heidi moment Sunday, cutting away from its Angels TV broadcast to a movie called "Smilla's Sense of Snow" right before the A's Mark Ellis hit a walk-off grand slam in the 12th inning.

Apparently, there was a communication error with the feed between Vyvx, the satellite carrier of the telecast, and AT&T, which distributes the telecast.

At 5 p.m., just before the final pitch, Channel 13 went to a color bar, a black screen with a KCOP logo, a commercial, and then to the movie, which TV Guide described as a "thriller about a half-Inuit scientist (Julia Ormond) who becomes obsessed with the suspicious death of an Eskimo boy in Copenhagen."

The snafu was reminiscent of NBC's gaffe on Nov. 17, 1968, when, with 65 seconds left in an important AFL game between the Raiders and Jets, it cut away to the movie "Heidi."

The Jets led, 32-29, at the time, and viewers missed a stirring Raiders' comeback that led to a 43-32 victory. "

MLB extra innings subscribers like myself received the entire game. Though it was an ending that was not fun to witness, I'd be pretty upset if it cut out on me.

News on Channel 13 Not Showing Angels' Loss

8:11 PM Sun, Jun 08, 2008 | Permalink | Comments (0)
Posted by: Matt Hurst

Don't blame ESPN.

There is a heated discussion on the Angelswin.com message board blaming ESPN for Channel 13 inexplicably going out right before Chris Bootcheck threw the game-deciding pitch to Mark Ellis on Sunday.

Instead, it was a communications error between Vyvx, a satellite carrier, and AT&T, the distributor of the signal. Thus, the signal was lost and a movie was played.

"It was not a technical error," Angels vice president of communications Tim Mead said. "There was some kind of miscommunication between the parties who oversee the satellite feed."

The screen showed a color bar, then black with the KCOP logo in the corner, ran a commercial, then the film began. The movie is described by TV Guide as a "Thriller about a half-Inuit scientist (Julia Ormond) who becomes obsessed with the suspicious death of an Eskimo boy in Copenhagen."

It easily brought comparisons to NBC's decision on November 17, 1968 to cut away from a New York Jets-Oakland Raiders game to show the movie Heidi. The Jets led 32-29 at the time with 65 seconds left, before the Raiders scored 14 points to win, 43-32, yet no one saw it.

Hey we got some press, along with my Heidi reference.

The worst part about losing the signal was thinking ESPN cut the Angels feed just so we could be force fed the Dodgers. It felt like Frank McCourt came to my house and changed the channel on me.
