| This is a nicely put together list...but remember that there are things called Trades that happen often with other clubs, but only once or so per year for the Angels which allow you to reconfigure your team and unload salary in one area if you take it on in another... Without any moves, The Angels starting rotation next year will make $48.75 million on the high end. The Bullpen will make around $9 million which is Rodney plus 5 club control pitchers. The OF (including DH) will make $33.45 for four players. The infield will make roughly $21 million. That includes Mathis, Wilson, and Napoli at the catching spot. And then they owe GMJ 11.4 which makes it $123 million-ish payroll. This is why several players will be traded/non-tendered. None of that arbitration money is guaranteed, and honestly the only players that will certainly be tendered are Weaver and Morales. The other guys aren't guaranteed to be tendered. Do I think they will tender Kendrick, Aybar, Napoli and Mathis? Yes but they are not all sure things. Frandsen, Callaspo and Willits are not for sure getting tendered but they do not cost a ton, so perhaps they will, perhaps they won't. Do I think they may try to unload Rodney, Rivera, and Abreu's contracts? Maybe, Yes, and Maybe. I think the payroll will be higher, but not in the $150 million dollar range, and they need to make a ton of changes. This team slumped to 80 games in 2010. They can't stay with the Status Quo and don't have a ton of minor league talent pushing for a job in 2011. The only two players that could work themselves into regular playing time at the start of 2011 would be Trumbo and Conger, but they won't do that if they are blocked by veterans. | |||

![]() Hall of Fame Posts: 32057 | My take. Callaspo will be on the roster next season. They didn't trade O'Sullivan for a rental. If the Angels don't sign Beltre he will be the starting 3rd baseman and if they do sign Beltre he will be the utility infielder. Frandsen is definitly gone and Willits has lost his position to another crowded outfield unless the Angels trade Juan Rivera. Izturis is in line to be traded since he is incapable of staying off the DL and Wood is possibly DFA'ed depending upon his Spring Training performance. They will keep Rodney and they are stuck with Abreu so hopefully both will have a rebound year.

![]() Hall of Fame Posts: 32057 | They only currently have about $50 million committed to 2012 but that is deceiving because it does not take into account all of the Arb eligible players. This year they already have $93 million tied up without arbitration raises. Edited by Blarg 2010-11-16 12:55 PM

![]() Hall of Fame Posts: 6628 | Rivera, Izzy, Napoli will all be gone. I think AC ends up back to his utility spot, because he can kinda play the OF, I think we see BWood hang on, as a back to 3B, 1b and SS I still say we sign one FA and trade for another hole, and fill the BP from within. Starting rotation will be Haren, Weaver, Santana, Piniero and Kaz

| Izzy is signed through 2012. Napoli is under arbitration control until after 2012. Hunter is signed though 2012. | |||

| Kazmir - 12.00 million / Rodney 5.5 million / Rivera 5.25 million / GMJ 11.4 million / Mathis 1.3 million Makes my stomach churn knowing that nearly 40 million of the Angels Payroll is committed to players who make no contribution to this team whatsoever. Can you imagine this team of that money was freed up to sign players who actually produce? Too bad MLB salary were not more like the PGA, you dont get paid unless you perform. IMO all player contracts should be built on the league minumum and loaded with performance based $ and incentive $. Edited by USMCAngelsFan 2010-11-17 5:56 AM | |||

Hall of Fame Posts: 20685 | Dude von Dudenstein - 2010-11-16 12:35 PM How much is coming off the books after the 2012 season? I forgot did some simple calculations. For the 2012 season. Right now, at $49 million committed. If you add Crawford, $69 million. Then Abreu's option kicks in, that's $77 million. Weaver, Napoli, Aybar and Kendrick will be in arbitration 3, and Morales in arbitration 2. For the 2013 season. $4.5 million committed. If you add Crawford, $24.5 million. Ervin and Haren have options. Both if excercised is $24 million, so $48.5 million. FA's Weaver, Napoli, Aybar, and Kendrick with Morales in arbitration 3.

Hall of Fame Posts: 7388 Location: Limbo | Don't forget Gary Matthews Jr's $10M (or so), which should be added to the guaranteed contract to make it $92.5M. I read somewhere that Moreno is, or will, agree to a payroll raise to about $135M. If you add in likely arbitration, that $92.5M becomes about $120M, which leaves only about $15M to play with. Obviously the Angels would have to trade someone--probably Napoli ($6M) and/or Rivera ($4M) to free up enough dough to sign Crawford, who will likely require $18M a year or more. I think the Angels will take one of two routes: 1) Sign Crawford, which necessitates trading Napoli and/or Rivera. Maybe signing a cheaper LHP like Ohman, but nothing else. 2) Not signing Crawford, giving a bit more leeway. Napoli or Rivera will likely still be traded, but the Angels go after a Soriano and/or a Downs or Feliciano. What I don't see happening is the Angels signing Crawford and Beltre, or even Crawford and Downs - unless lots of payroll is shed. But by the time they can shed payroll, those major players will probably already have been traded.

Hall of Fame Posts: 50047 | Has there EVER been a team with this high of a payroll but without any longterm contracts beyond 2 guaranteed seasons? I hope this isn't Arte's new long term goal (low guarantee years for big bucks). Hard to be a WS participant in this tough league, without any longterm contracts. On the bright side, no more GMJHGH type disgusting contracts Edited by Angel Oracle 2010-12-05 10:53 AM

Hall of Fame Posts: 20685 | pimpmyteam - 2011-01-11 7:25 PM I wouldn't be surprised if Weaver ended up with 9-10M The hardest part for Weaver to justify asking for that much will be the comparisons. The two that IMO compare best is Hernandez and Verlander. Hernandez got $6.5 million and Verlander got $6.75 million. Of course both of these pitchers had their arbitration 2 and 3 years bought out from them in the form of long term contracts. So it'll be all Boras if he could score in the $9-10 million range.

He really improved in 2010 and he's out of options, he should make the bullpen before Kohn IMO. Bullpen battles in Spring Training will be interesting, there's a lot of guys competing for a handful of spots. Edited by ~MMP~ 2011-01-18 5:29 PM

Hall of Fame Posts: 50047 | It would appear that the pen would be Rodney, Walden, Downs, Takahashi, Jepsen, and either Thompson or Kohn. Takahashi would be the long innings guy/setup guy/lefty specialist. I would have Thompson up here to start the season, building on his new found cutter and new found confidence up here. Kohn has only pitched for some 3 seasons, after starting his college career at College of Charleston as a position player. More tune up work at SLC couldn't hurt him.
